June
Saturday, June 11 - Historic  Ranches  TourVisit the CM and Ring Lake ranches in a tour sponsored by the Museum and Wind River Program of the Jackson Hole Land Trust. Meet at 9 a.m. at the Dubois Museum for an all-day tour including a catered lunch. The program fee is $35.  Reservations are required.

 

Monday, June 13Make a Walking StickJoin the National Bighorn Sheep Interpretive Center staff to make an important tool for all your outdoor adventures this summer.  Willow sticks, crutch tips, decorations and tools are provided.  This free activity for all ages is at 7:00 p.m. at the National Bighorn Sheep Interpretive Center, 907 W. Ramshorn ST.  Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

 

 

Saturday, June 18 - Swedish Smorgasbord Celebrate the heritage of the Scandinavian tie hacks at this Dubois Museum sponsored buffet dinner at the Headwaters Center served at 5 and 6 p.m.  Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for children under 10.

 

Monday, June 20 – Wind River Reservation Tribal Governments 101 — Ed Wadda will speak on Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho tribal governments, from pre-reservation times to contemporary governance models.  This free program is at 7 p.m. in the Dennison Lodge and is presented by the Wyoming Humanities Council as part of its Humanities Forum.

 

Saturday, June 25 - Tie Hack TourMeet at the museum at 10 a.m. for a free all-day driving/hiking tour of Union Pass tie hack sites led by Museum Education Director Sally Wulbrecht.

 

Thursday, June 30 – Bare Facts about Bears — Learn the ropes of living in and visiting bear country from Diane Probasco, wildlife biologist with the Wind River and Washakie Ranger Districts at 7 p.m. in the Dennison Lodge.

 

July


 

Thursday July 7  - Badlands Geology Walk Meet at the museum at 6 p.m. for a free walking tour of the unique geology of the Dubois area led by Museum Education Director Sally Wulbrecht.  Participants will carpool to the Badlands.

 

 

Thursday, July 14 – First Ascent? A Look at Prehistoric Mountaineers in the Wind River Range  — Matt Stirn has spent the last 5 years with Dr. Rich Adams researching the archaeology of Northwest Wyoming’s high country.  Through an investigation of the tools used in alpine archaeology along with the team's most recent discoveries, this talk will examine the
early inhabitants of the Winds and how they used, lived, and arrived in their beautiful surroundings.  This free program starts at 7 p.m. in the Dennison Lodge.

 

Saturday, July 16  - Museum DayEnjoy this free annual celebration of traditional Western crafts featuring craft demonstrations and sales plus traditional food, and entertainment from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Dubois Museum complex.

 

Thursday, July 21 – Torrey Basin Petroglyph Trek — Meet at the museum at 6 p.m. for a free driving/hiking tour led by Museum Education Director Sally Wulbrecht.

Friday, July 22 – Wyoming Rodeo Gals — Melanie O'Hara will present a free program about the athleticism of early women rodeo competitors at 6 p.m. in the Dennison Lodge. The program is presented by the Wyoming Humanities Council as part of its Humanities Forum.

 

 

 

August


Thursday, August 4 – The Times, They Were A-Changin’: Wyoming Prehistory From the Bow to the Rifle Bryon Schroeder, archaeologist and colleague of Dr. Rich Adams, will talk about his work on social, ethnic, and technological changes during the late Prehistoric period for residents of the Wind River Range and Big Horn Basin in a free program at 7 p.m. in the Dennison Lodge.

 

Saturday, August 6 – Archaeology with Altitude Gala Join University of Wyoming’s Frison Institute and the Dubois Museum in a day-long fundraising celebration of cutting-edge high altitude archaeology.  The day’s festivities include tours of sheep traps, drive lines, and buffalo jumps.  End the day by coming to the Headwaters for an evening of Wyoming elegance with a banquet catered by Payá, followed by an update on the high rise village with Dr. Rich Adams of the Wyoming State Archaeology Office, and a program by ice field archaeologist Dr. Craig Lee, known for his appearances on NOVA and the Discovery Channel.  The cost of the tour is $20 each; the cost of the banquet is $60/plate.  Reservations are required.

 

Absaroka Ranch

Meet at 9 a.m. at the Dubois Museum for an all-day tour including a catered lunch. The cost of the tour is $35. (Currently there is a wait list for this event. Thursday, August 18 – The Real Buzz About Bees Ever wondered about Wonderful Wyoming Honey?  Owner Milt Miller will fill you in on the secret life of bees in the upper Wind River Valley. The free program is at 7 p.m. in the Dennison Lodge.

 

Thursday, August 25Take a Walk on the Wild Side Enjoy local author Joe Hutto’s tales of his life with wild turkeys and bighorn sheep.  Hutto will sign copies of his books Illumination in the Flatwoods: A Season with the Wild Turkey (which is being made into a BBC/PBS documentary), and The Light in High Places (winner of the Wyoming State Historical Society award in 2010).  Books will be available for purchase at the event.  This free program is at 7 p.m. in the Dennison Lodge.
