June

Thursday, June 13 – Torrey Basin Petroglyph Trek — Meet at the Museum at 5 p.m. for a free driving/hiking tour of Dinwoody-tradition rock art led by Museum Education Director Sally Wulbrecht.  The tour is limited to 15 participants, and registration is required.  Contact the Dubois Museum for more information.  Registration is first-come first-served.  Participants will carpool to the Torrey Basin.

 

Saturday, June 15Make a Walking Stick Join the National Bighorn Sheep Interpretive Center staff to make an important tool for all your outdoor adventures this summer.  Willow sticks, crutch tips, decorations and tools are provided.  This free activity for all ages is at 2:00 p.m. at the National Bighorn Sheep Interpretive Center, 907 W. Ramshorn ST.  Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

 

 

Saturday, June 15 – Swedish Smorgasbord — Celebrate the heritage of the Scandinavian tie hacks at this Dubois Museum-sponsored buffet dinner at the Headwaters Center served at 5 and 6 p.m.  Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for children under 10.

 

Sunday, June 23 – Badlands Geology Trek First in a three-part series featuring the unique geology of the Dubois area, this trek is a free walking tour of the Dubois Badlands.  Meet at the museum at 1 p.m.  Participants will carpool to the Badlands.

 

 

Thursday, June 27 – Bear Spray 101 Visiting or living in Bear Country? Been carrying that bear spray around for years? Does it ever expire?  Does it really work? What does it feel like when you spray it? NFS Wildlife Biologist Diane Probasco will answer these questions and more.  Learn all about how to carry bear spray, when to use it, when and how to dispose of the bear spray, and even a little about bear behavior. To top off the night you will be able to spray some inert bear spray to get the feel, without the side effects.  This free program starts at 7 p.m. in the Dennison Lodge in the Museum complex.

Saturday, July 6 – Historic Ranches Tour — Visit the Double Diamond and Finley ranches in a tour sponsored by the Museum and Wind River Program of the Jackson Hole Land Trust. Meet at 9 a.m. at the Dubois Museum for an all-day tour including a catered lunch. The program fee is $35.  Reservations are required.

Sunday, July 14 – Geology of the Torrey Valley Trek — Second in a three-part series featuring the unique geology of the Dubois area, this trek is a free hiking tour of the Torrey Valley.  Meet at the museum at 1 p.m.  Participants will carpool to the Trail Lake Trailhead.

 

Thursday, July 18Backyard Dance at the Dubois MuseumJoin Mike Hurwitz and the Aimless Drifters from Alta, WY for an evening of live music and dancing.  Bring a chair to relax in and your dancing boots to twirl the night away to country blues and cowboy music under the stars.  This free event will feature light refreshments and is made possible with grants from the Opportunity Shop and the Wyoming Arts Council.

Saturday, July 20 – Museum Day — Enjoy this free annual celebration of traditional Western activities featuring craft demonstrations and sales plus traditional food, entertainment, and old-fashioned carnival games from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Dubois Museum complex.

 

Thursday, July 25 – Wyoming Shakespeare Festival Company — This year the Lander-based Festival Company will be presenting The Merchant of Venice  at 6 p.m. in the Dennison Lodge in the Museum complex.  Admission is free, but donations to support the Company are gratefully accepted.

Sunday, July 28 – Tie Hack Tour — Meet at the museum at 1 p.m. for a free afternoon driving/hiking tour of Union Pass tie hack sites.  Participants will carpool to the sites. 

 

 

August


Thursday, August 110,000 Years of Climate Change and Human Life Join University of Wyoming archaeology professor Dr. Bob Kelly as he examines the changes in climate that have taken place in Wyoming over the past 10,000 years, and the innovative ways humans have adapted to those changes.  This free program will begin at 7 p.m. in the Dennison Lodge in the Museum Complex.

 

 

Saturday, August 3 – Archaeology with Altitude Gala — Join the University of Wyoming’s Frison Institute and the Dubois Museum in a fundraising celebration of cutting-edge high altitude archaeology.  Enjoy an elegant reception at the Headwaters featuring hors d’oeuvres catered by Payá, followed by Wyoming’s first state archaeologist, Dr. George Frison.  Tickets for the reception are $25.  Call the Museum for reservations.

Thursday, August 15 Medicinal Plants of the Sheep Eaters —Join John Mionczynski, wildlife biologist and ethnobotanist, to learn about the medicinal plants available to prehistoric peoples and people today at the high altitudes.  This free program starts at 7 p.m. in the Dennison Lodge in the Museum complex.

 

Sunday, August 18 – Jade Lake Trek Last in a three-part series featuring the unique geology of the Dubois area, this trek is a free hiking tour of Jade Lake.  Meet at the museum at 1 p.m.  Participants will carpool to Brooks Lake.

Sunday, September 1 – Sheep Trap Trek Meet at the museum at 1 p.m. for a free afternoon hike to an ancient Sheep Eater Rocky Mountain Bighorn sheep trap in the foothills of the Wind River Mountain range.  Participants will carpool to the trailhead.

 

Saturday, September 7 – Historic Ranches Tour — Visit the Flying U, T Cross, and Mary Adams ranches in a tour sponsored by the Museum and Wind River Program of the Jackson Hole Land Trust.
