Sheep Trap Tour - $25.
Saturday, August 6, 2011
Meet 9:00 a.m. at the Dubois Museum parking lot.
Transportation provided.
Dress for the changing Wyoming weather.  Sturdy walking shoes are recommended.
Limited to first 20 registrants.

Join Museum Educator Sally Wulbrecht on a half-day treck to view an ancient Mountain Shoshone bighorn sheep trap.  At least twenty of these sheep traps have been found and documented by archaeologists in the Dubois, Wyoming area.  The sheep traps are wooden and stone structures constructed by the Mountain Shoshone.  The traps provided a way for these people to trap and kill the bighorn sheep.  The Mountains Shoshone, also known as the Sheep Eaters, not only ate the meat of the bighorn sheep, but also used their hides and other body parts for clothing, utensils and tools.  They even used the horns of the rams to make powerful bows for hunting.

Transportation is provided for the three mile drive to the parking site.  The tour will meet at 9:00 a.m. at the Dubois Museum parking lot.  The tour begins with a short presentation of the lives of the Sheep Eaters at the museum.  The trek involves moderate hiking with some steep climbs at over 8000’.  Be sure to wear comfortable hiking shoes or boots and wear clothes suitable for the weather in a mountain environment.  Plenty of water is a must.  There is a beautiful view overlooking the Wind River Valley, Absaroka Mountains, and the Dubois Badlands, so binoculars and a camera are encouraged.
